Introduction

NetUnits is a little tool meant to be very useful to families and *very* simple to set up.

This is probably this tool's strongest point: You can have the system up and running within a minute! (If you've tried other products you have probably noticed what a headache they can be to set up)

By design, NetUnits does *only one thing* but does it well: help you control Internet (ab)use. It does so by distributing even amounts of time to the various family members. However, please do not expect NetUnits (or any other software for that matter) to fully replace parental attention.

How It Works

What NetUnits does is very simple but effective. Every 7 days, each user of the computer is automatically granted a certain amount of NetUnits (which basically correspond to minutes of computer use). When a user runs out of NetUnits the computer basically becomes unusable for that user until the next automatic recharge date.

NetUnits counters can be checked at anytime using the NetUnits desktop icon or by pressing the 'F6' key.

The automatic weekly reset feature will also help your children get used to the fundamental idea of managing limited resources, just like with pocket money.

As the "NetUnits administrator" (i.e. the user who downloaded and installed NetUnits - typically one of the parents), you can also decide to manually reset a counter at any time, using the NetUnits Control tool in your Start menu.

Note: to make the best use of NetUnits it is recommended to set up Windows as a multi-user environment. This can be done through the Windows "Users" control panel.

Setting up NetUnits is extremely simple:

1. Double-click the installer you have downloaded above to read the short license agreement.
2. If you agree to the license terms, the installer proceeds to set up and activate NetUnits.
3. That's it!
   
   
4. (optional) By default user quotas are set to 300 NetUnits per week, but this amount can be easily modified using the NetUnits Control tool in your Start menu.
   
   

Important advice: To avoid any frustration, be sure to take the time to introduce the new system to the other family members.
